Irish History
Information on what the term 'Black Irish' means, and how it
may apply to our family:

Everyone should know that West Irish are now thought to have
less Celtic blood than their natives on the East. What that
means is, we be able to trace our lineage a bit further back
than Ireland.
New genetic research does show a strong similarity between the
Y chromosome of Basque males and Irish males with Gaelic
surnames,[2] with a notable difference between the west of
Ireland and the east of Ireland, in that those in the west of
Ireland have less input from Anglo Saxon and Scandinavian
populations. These would have been Celtic-speaking peoples
with Celtic surnames - likely Basques of the Iberian
Penninsula who would have stopped migrating to Ireland in the
5th Century B.C.
It is not believed that they were the descendants of the
Spanish Armada from 1588. However, this myth survives in the
county Galway, which is known to have slaughtered a few
Spaniards as well as protected them.
In regards to the social attitudes of the Irish in the
following XVIIth century, foreign travellers stated that: "The
Irish are fond of strangers; they love Spaniards, French and
other foreigners, but the English and Scots are their
irreconcilable enemies;"(32) "The native Irish are a very
loving people to each other though constantly false to
strangers, the Spaniards only excepted."

The origin of the Basque people is shrouded in mystery.
Whatever their origins, it is widely believed that the Basques
have occupied a single region of Europe longer than any other
identifiable ethnic group.
Investigations of Basque blood types have found that there are
more Basques with type O blood than in the general European
population.
